On Wednesday, March 14th, a national school walkout will be taking place to urge for improved school safety. At East Ridge High School, our student government has taken the reins to organize a demonstration that will honor the lives of the 17 people who were killed in the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL earlier this year. SGA requested the participation of officers from all of the clubs and organizations at East Ridge High to assist in making sure the demonstration runs smoothly. To raise awareness, SGA is requesting students and faculty wear orange.

In addition to the walkout, SGA is selling cut-outs of hearts for $1 during lunch for students to write messages on. The message hearts will be placed on banners made by SGA and other clubs to be sent to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the proceeds from selling the hearts will be donated to a verified GoFundMe created by the Broward Education Foundation for MSDHS. At the same table at lunch, SGA has pre-written letters that will be sent to Congress, urging for stricter school safety legislation, available for students to sign. As an incentive, SGA has ordered approximately 2,000 wristbands for those who sign a letter or purchase a cut-out heart.

The school walkout is approved by ERHS administration and will be built into the schedule, only taking about 20-25 minutes out of the day. The demonstration will take place in the courtyard and an important reminder to all students is that this will be a peaceful demonstration. Administration and SGA request that students understand that this is a serious matter and to be respectful during the demonstration.
